Engine Synchronization Roles
Engine management systems rely on dual position sensors for exact timing:
-
Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor: Reads magnetic pulses from a reluctor wheel on the crankshaft pulley. It tracks engine RPM and Top Dead Center (TDC) positioning for injection and ignition timing.
-
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor: Tracks camshaft rotation. It identifies when cylinder number one is on its compression stroke to execute sequential fuel injection.
Failure Symptoms & Codes
-
Common Codes: P0335 (Crankshaft Circuit Malfunction), P0340 (Camshaft Circuit Malfunction), P0016 (Correlation Error).
-
Symptoms: A complete no-start condition occurs. The starter cranks, but the engine fails to fire due to missing timing signals. The engine cuts out while cruising due to thermal expansion. The car enters limp-home mode.
Advanced Testing Methodology
-
Oscilloscope Testing: Use an oscilloscope to check square-wave patterns (Hall-effect) or alternating sine waves (inductive sensors).
-
Air Gap Inspection: Measure the distance between the CKP sensor tip and reluctor wheel teeth. Clearances should range from 0.5mm to 1.2mm. Debris or worn bearings alter this gap and cause signal interference.
