The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, combined with the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, serves as the core calculation unit for the engine’s incoming air mass.

Hot-Wire Architecture: Utilizes a platinum wire maintained at a constant overheated temperature (typically around 200°C above ambient temperature). As incoming air cools the platinum wire, the electric current required to maintain its temperature changes in direct proportion to the mass of the airflow.

Location: Installed on the rigid plastic intake ducting, positioned immediately downstream of the engine air filter box and isolated at least 15–20 cm upstream of the throttle body assembly to prevent turbulent airflow interference.
Failure Symptoms & Common OBD-II Trouble Codes
When the MAF sensor becomes contaminated with carbon soot, filter oil residue, or experiences internal circuit fractures, the ECU records diagnostic trouble codes:

P0100 / P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Malfunction or Range/Performance Problem.

P0171 / P0175: System Too Lean / Too Rich (Fuel Trim bank limits exceeded).

Real-World Symptoms: Sluggish engine response during sudden throttle acceleration, unstable idling RPM fluctuating between 500 and 1200 RPM, and black exhaust smoke caused by incorrect fuel compensation.
Professional Garage Testing & Replacement Procedure

Power Supply Voltage Check: Use a Digital Multimeter (DMM) to measure the supply voltage pin (typically 12V), ground pin, and signal output pin (ranging from 0.5V at idle to 4.5V at wide-open throttle).

Cleaning & Maintenance: Remove the sensor assembly and spray it using a fast-evaporating specialized MAF Sensor Cleaner. Never use brake cleaner or touch the platinum wire, as this will fracture or ruin the delicate thermal film.

Replacement: If the signal voltage remains locked at a flat line or fails to scale with engine load, replace the entire sensor assembly with a genuine unit (Denso, Bosch) matched precisely to the vehicle’s 17-character VIN.
